As part of HALLENKUNST Chemnitz, Rafael Gerlach is leaving the realm of painting with the new series “SHELTER” in order to open up a new space for his expression. The title symbolizes both physical and emotional shelter. Found objects (objets trouvés) from public spaces or abandoned environments are transformed in scale (1:35) and material and form as a monochrome, three-dimensional composition a staged reality in a miniature world of their own. By decontextualizing the found objects, Gerlach deliberately plays with opposites: Loss and protection, destruction and creation, chaos and order, reality and fiction. These dioramas not only refer to the original beauty of these places, but also show the fragility and transience of urban structures in an unusual staging, which is documented in the book and revealed to the viewer through detailed photographs.

Rafael Gerlach‘s works focus on the dialogue between object and environment.
His characteristic visual language seeks the connection between surface, architecture and function as well as the cultural and social situation on site. Through this influence on the architecture, new points of reference can be created in the context of each recipient‘s world of experience.
Due to the external changes in urban space, Rafael Gerlach‘s language is also always in motion and thus remains in open dialogue with external structure, people and the living world. Rafael Gerlach lives in Munich (GER). Exhibitions, projects and murals can be found in the Arab Emirates, Australia, Argentina, Bulgaria, Chile, Germany, France, India, Italy, Canada, Colombia, Lebanon, Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Russia, Switzerland, Spain, South Africa, Turkey, UK, USA.
